- Off-theme words of four letters or more are not wasted — they charge the hint meter.

The spangram is the backbone of every Strands puzzle: one special theme word — sometimes two words joined together — that stretches across the grid from one side to the opposite side, top to bottom, left to right, or any pair of opposing edges. It captures the day's theme in a single phrase, and while regular theme words light up blue, the spangram lights up yellow.
Why chase it first? The spangram usually explains the theme outright. Once you know it, the remaining theme words become educated guesses instead of blind searches, and the letters it consumes eliminate big chunks of the board.
